COLAS chooses the RF 200 Ermont

The COLAS site in Saint-Aubin, in the Jura, had had a
TSM 17 ERMONT since 1991, which had produced 80,
000 to 100,000 tons of asphalt a year since it was
commissioned. Even though, over time, the plant had
benefited from such upgrades as replacement of the
filter and the automatic system, this continuous asphalt
plant, limited to 160 t/h , was no longer at the cutting edge
of technology as it was not equipped for recycling
or the production of warm-mix asphalt.
 

In December 2011, COLAS decided to bring this
installation up-to-date, and the MARINI-ERMONT
proposal was its technical choice: a highly versatile RF
200 ERMONT fitted with the very latest technological
developments available. Capable not just of ensuring a
maximum output of 220 t/h, achieving a recycling rate of
50%, and storing 240 tons of asphalt for up to 48 hours
for more flexible operation, this plant can also produce
warm-mix asphalt by introducing liquid additives or
foamed bitumen thanks to the AQUABlack kit.
 

Delivered in July 2012, the plant is equipped with a latest generation
recycling ring, now entirely redesigned to
achieve exceptional reliability and do away with any wear
or need for servicing. In addition to enabling reclaimed
materials to be introduced, the ring is also used to
introduce the intake and recovery fines into the mixture, or
solid additives when applicable. Since its commissioning,
over 20,000 tons of reclaimed materials have bee
handled, with an average recycling rate of 23%.
 

The warm-mix asphalt now also features prominently in
the catalogue of formulas available. In particular, foamed
bitumen asphalt can be produced at temperatures 15 to
30°C less than traditional formulas, and continue to be
easy to manage for several hours. The combination of
recycled material plus foamed bitumen has thus won
over operators and application teams, since, in 2013,
production was carried out entirely with bitumen
injected in foam form: this is a first for France!

Another aspect in the spotlight is energy efficiency. The new
automatic production management system SoftMix is thus
fitted with the Ecodrive module, with which heat
consumption in kWh/t can be monitored in real time – an
invaluable aid for the operator in running the plant. In the
same mindset, the dryer-drum-mixer has three in-built
temperature probes that measure the temperature of
materials at different points in the drum in real time, making
it possible to anticipate and more accurately control the final
temperature of the mixture. Moreover, the most powerful
motors – the drag slat conveyor and fans of the burner and
exhaust in particular – are fitted with frequency variators
which, in addition to reducing operating noise, above all cut
the amount of energy consumed. Lastly, the site has had a
building erected for covering stocks of sand and reclaimed
materials so as to limit the humidity of these energy guzzling
materials, thereby cutting the plant's consumption
even further, all the while improving the quality of the
asphalt manufactured.

With this RF 200 ERMONT, COLAS now has a modern
and high-performance industrial tool at Saint-Aubin
which is proving entirely satisfactory. This encouraging
example of joint success found between the
manufacturer and customer is set to be repeated, since
the commissioning of a second RF 200 ERMONT for
COLAS is scheduled for the end of the year, with the aim
of achieving the same level of satisfaction!
